This blog is devoted to Trickster dieties and characters, focusing on their more positive attributes (but still recognising the negative ones, as lessons of what not to do).

I was inspired to start this blog by the portrayal of Norse god Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, in the 2011 Marvel film Thor, but it is dedicated to and about all Tricksters, and those who play, paint, or write about them. Please feel free to suggest links to anything involving one prominently, or to write a little something here about one yourself!

I am a fangrrl: this means there will be plenty of SQUEEing and frivolity (and SLASH references) here, not just academia. I think a Trickster would have appreciation for adoration aimed in their direction -- and for wackiness. ;P

While I'm a terrible liar and strive for honesty, I have long been fascinated with Tricksters -- their cleverness and their changeable, often insane, nature. They show us that life is often not as simple as good versus evil, black and white, lies and truth, but an infinite number of shades of grey. They also teach us that things are seldom what they seem -- and that we can be anything we want, if we just allow ourselves to be fluid in mind and body, that reality is as much a matter of perception as it is a tangiblity.

Some observations I've made regarding the nature of Tricksters in mythology, legends, literature, and even real life:

Many Tricksters love mayhem/chaos, and live without much (if any) regard for rules. This doesn't mean that they always break the rules, but rather that they don't really think about them one way or the other, and won't refrain from breaking one if it keeps them from doing as they wish.

Many Tricksters can either shapeshift into whom or whatever they choose (or at least have a few forms, not just two), or are masters of disguise.

Besides being adept at lying and/or forgery, some are also good at slight of hand, or some form of hypnotic suggestion such as making their mark feel at ease with their soothing voice or entrancing them with their eyes.

Living in a blur of lies and truth, Tricksters can and often do lie to themselves (not just others), fooling themselves into believing what they have conjured is reality. In essence, they can be the ultimate method actors.

As a friend pointed out to me, Tricksters aren't always liars, per say" sometimes the truth is just as effective in creating chaos or getting others to do as you want them to. (Of course, that's in keeping with the idea of truth and lies being a blur.)

Tricksters are often egomaniacs. Further, existence can something of a game to them; they can feel that they know the best way to win, and that the rest of us are their pawns. BUT, even when ego is part of their motivation, they also can, simultaneously, be working with the intent to protect or save others. The problem comes when they infringe on the rights of others, making choices for them (or at least eliminating options), because they feel they know best (or, in worse cases, are simply greedy and place their own desires above those of others).

Just because they lie doesn't make them evil. They can lie to hide others (think Schindler's List, or of those who participated in the underground railroad), to outwit those who would bring harm to others. They are the secret agents and undercover police, not just the con men. They are the storytellers and artists, not just the slanderous and libelous media. They are the charmers who tell little white lie that makes someone feel better about themselves, the sparers of pain, not just the bullies.
